'Reaching For Tomorrow',which as far as I know is the final release by Switch presents the pros and cons of the group. The title track of this album for example is a perfect example of the tracks of Switch's tears-percolating beat, wonderful sense of melody and (especially for funk) a great sense of musical juxtaposition worthy of even The Beatles! Not to mention the singing and writing of Jermaine Jackson. Most of the uptempo tracks here are it's equal,if not far behind. It's on the ballads that the weaknessess of this band and album come through. It's not that they aren't well constructed-they are. It's that 1) they could kind of be done by anyone and 2) they are sung by James DeBarge, whose sweet but piercingly high voice gets old after awhile frankly. I think if Switch hadn't have maintained there same bag of tricks so long and gone down one of their many unexplored musical directions they might have gained the recognition that Switch so sorely deserved.
